Reverse it: what price do you actually need?

Work backwards from the profit you want. Using the same costs and fees as the calculator above, here is the selling price that hits your target — referral fees scale with price, so the solver accounts for that.

FBA vs. shipping it yourself (FBM)

A rough comparison using your numbers. FBM skips the fulfillment fee and storage, but you pay your own postage and packing — and lose the Prime badge, which usually costs conversion.

The three fees that decide whether a product works

Every FBA sale is split the same way. Miss any one of these in your math and a “profitable” product quietly loses money.

    1

    Referral fee

Amazon's commission, charged as a percentage of the total sale price — including any shipping and gift-wrap charges you collect. Most categories sit at 15%; electronics pay 8%, clothing scales up to 17%, and jewelry starts at 20%. There's a $0.30 minimum per item.

    2

    Fulfillment fee

A flat per-unit fee for picking, packing and shipping, set by your size tier and billable weight. Billable weight is the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight (L × W × H ÷ 139). Shaving half an inch off a box can drop a whole tier — and dollars off every sale.

    3

    Monthly storage

Charged per cubic foot for the space your inventory occupies — $0.87/ft³ for standard-size products most of the year, jumping to $2.40/ft³ in the October–December peak. Slow-moving stock also risks aged-inventory surcharges after 181 days.

The rates this calculator uses, so you can check the math. Amazon adjusts fees roughly once a year — always confirm against Seller Central before committing to a large order.

    Fulfillment fees by size tier

Per unit, standard (non-peak) rates. Your product's tier is highlighted.

    Size tierLimitsFee
    Small standard≤ 15″ × 12″ × 0.75″, ≤ 1 lb$3.06 – $3.65 by weight
    Large standard≤ 18″ × 14″ × 8″, ≤ 20 lb$3.77 – $6.13+, then +$0.30/lb
    Small oversize≤ 60″ × 30″, ≤ 70 lb$9.73 + $0.42/lb over 1 lb
    Medium oversizeLongest side ≤ 108″, ≤ 150 lb$19.05 + $0.42/lb over 1 lb
    Large oversizeLength + girth ≤ 165″, ≤ 150 lb$89.98 + $0.83/lb over 90 lb
    Special oversizeLongest side > 108″ or > 150 lb$158.49 + $0.83/lb over 90 lb

Apparel and products with lithium batteries carry small surcharges not modeled here. Peak holiday fulfillment surcharges (mid-Oct to mid-Jan) are also excluded — margins get thinner in Q4.

Amazon FBA calculator — common questions

How accurate is this calculator compared to Amazon's own?

It uses the published 2025 US referral, fulfillment and storage rates and the same size-tier and dimensional-weight rules as Seller Central's revenue calculator, so for standard products the results should match within a few cents.

Where it can differ: category-specific quirks (apparel and hazmat surcharges), peak-season fulfillment surcharges, placement fees if you use Amazon's inbound placement service, and low-inventory-level fees. Treat the output as a sourcing decision tool, then verify your finalist product in Seller Central.

What is dimensional weight, and why does it matter?

Dimensional (DIM) weight = length × width × height ÷ 139, in inches and pounds. Amazon bills you on whichever is heavier: actual weight or DIM weight. A big, light product — pillows, yoga mats, plush toys — is almost always billed on DIM weight, which is why its fulfillment fee surprises new sellers.

The fix is packaging: compress, vacuum-seal, or redesign the box so all three dimensions shrink. Dropping from large-standard to small-standard can save $1–$3 on every single unit.

What profit margin should I aim for on FBA?

Common rules of thumb: a net margin of 20–30% after all Amazon fees and landed costs, and an ROI of 100%+ on your landed cost, so your cash recycles fast enough to reorder. Below ~15% margin there's little room for PPC — and most products need PPC to launch — price increases from suppliers, or a fee change.

Use the returns and advertising buffers in this calculator to stress-test a product at realistic, not best-case, numbers before you order.

Does the referral fee apply to shipping charges too?

Yes. Amazon calculates the referral fee on the total amount the customer pays — item price plus any shipping and gift-wrap charges you collect. With FBA the customer typically pays Amazon's shipping rates (or nothing, with Prime), so in practice the calculator applies it to your item price, which is how most sellers model it.

What fees are NOT included here?

The monthly Professional selling plan ($39.99), inbound placement service fees, removal/disposal fees, aged-inventory surcharges, low-inventory-level fees, return processing fees for high-return categories, and your PPC spend (unless you add it with the advertising buffer). For established sellers these are real — but they depend on your account and inventory behavior rather than the product itself, so they're excluded from the per-unit math.

Is FBA worth it versus fulfilling orders myself?

For small, light products under ~$30, FBA's negotiated shipping rates usually beat anything an individual seller can get, and the Prime badge lifts conversion enough to cover the fee gap. For heavy, oversize, or very cheap items, merchant-fulfilled (or Seller Fulfilled Prime, if you qualify) can win. The comparison panel above gives you a per-unit starting point — then weigh your time honestly.
